PLANT-BASED CHEF (1x)

The Kamp Kitchen aims to establish a regenerative food culture for the land and the people by eating healthy and balanced diets in non-violent and non-polluting ways. Based on these principles, we are looking for one person who want to join the adventure of mainly cooking regional, seasonal and plant-based food in a very basic set-up kitchen. Added to that, a spice of research and documenting spirit is essential so the journey is tracked and shared with the broader community.

Requirements: Experienced cooking for groups of 30 people & Knowledge about balanced and nutritious plant based diets.
Minimum duration: 2 months, but ideally longer
When: Starting any time soon, until the end of the season (end of October)

General helpER (3x)

Project Kamp has been growing in the last few years and currently has many different elements, like our community-size compost, herb garden, toilet system, and waste system, that can use some extra love and care. They come with ongoing research on how to maintain them with a growing group of people.

And besides all this, there is a digital world, which includes writing text, taking photos and maintaining social media channels. So far, for all these tasks, we are assembling a team of versatile, skilled people who will jump into different jobs and support others when needed. So, if you thrive on diverse multi-tasking, this position might be for you. Feel free to mention any other skills you see relevant at the Kamp that haven't been mentioned 🙂

We are looking for help to produce our videos!

Currently we have enough support for Season 4, but Season 5 will come next year, so you can already apply for it. We will check applications when that time comes. Meanwhile you can sit, relax and enjoy Season 4 videos. Hope you like them!

Our main challenge is that videos need to happen weekly, so we created a system where people doing projects around the Kamp record themselves, and then the video team shapes the stories & videos. This means we do a lot of teamwork! Main focus is on editing, scripting and supporting the other teams to record their projects. If you want to work in a small/cosy office in the middle of nature, in a growing YouTube channel, sign up! Also possible to help remotely, let us know too!

Requirements: Experience editing videos.

Coding community Platform (remote)

We develop our own (open source) software to document our research and build an online community. This will be a crucial part for Project Kamp in the coming years to distrubute knowledge. It's a big project and needs contributers! It's build in React, using Firebase and Typescript. You can read more about the software here and find all the code on Github.

Landscaping

End of summer, we will start more earthwork to retain water. We haven’t decided yet on what project it will be, and we will take this winter to observe water flows. But it will probably involve making swales and digging. We are looking for someone who wants to come mid of August and stay until the end of the season. The job will involve observation, planning, guiding the digger, and executing the project. Experience in the field is a must. And be aware that the end of the season gets wet and rainy :)

Requirements: Experience with earthwork for water retention.

Land clearance (3X)

In 2017, our land got burned, and since then, invasive species have been taking over the land. In the last 3 years, a lot of the land has been made way more accessible. But there are still many treasures hidden underneath brambles and mimosa. With several new areas to clear on the planning, we are looking for an energised team that is good with a lot of physical labour and loves to spend time in, and care for nature.

Requirements: Knowing how to use a brushcutter and a chainsaw
Duration: 4 months

Graphic Designer

Up until now we’ve mainly been focussed on regenerating the land, setting up basic infrastructure and making weekly videos. This year we need help from a team of graphic designers to update our long term documentation, website, branding to make our mission clear and a big crowdfund campaign for our Community Center. As you can see, this job will be quite diverse and requires someone with graphic skills UI/UX design, who ideally knows Figma/Webflow (not a must) and has a good portfolio with experience. We have space for two Graphic designers full season and one until June.

Requirements: Experience with the task + Portfolio

Second “Recycled” houSE

High priority

Last year we built our PigTrailer House, following the theme of reusing and experimenting with recycling materials. This year we want to continue our research and we want to build another example of a “recycled house” that can serve as an inspiration for others to make the most out of the materials we have available. As it will be an experimental house the base to use is still uncertain, but for this project you should be prepared for any kind of materials coming. This challenge will require a certain level of expertise due to the variety of materials we could find.As well as the basic building skills needed such as windows/door installation, panelling, flooring, basic electricity… This can be a project that takes the whole season to make and the goal is to have it finished by the end of the season

Granite Ruin Renovation

High priority

We have found some new ruins in our land and we want to bring them back to life again. This ruin was built in the old times and has been abandoned for a long period. It is in a very basic state, it has no roof or wooden structures, due to the time and the fire. It basically has four old granite walls built in the past. We want to keep as much as we can from it and renovate it by trying to use natural materials.

Specific tasks:
- Partially rebuild old granite walls
- Install doors and windows
- Install basic electricity (cables, sockets, lights and switches)
- Isolation and finishing of the walls, floor and ceiling

Specific skills:
- Stone/brickwork
- Basic electricity
- Plastering
- Roofin
- Carpentry

We are looking for someone experienced in this field that can also lead a project and/or have managing skills. We truly believe in the power of the group and we aim to create a team to make this happen.

Handy Designer (2x) 

Our team is partially built from designers, their creativity is quite useful in this raw setting. We are looking for more designers to join Project Kamp. We will be developing several projects where experienced designers can help to build and make. And since we also document our projects to be shared, it is important to have some 3D Modelling skills to be able to communicate with the rest. If you have experience in the following areas let us know and we can see how to help prototype a more sustainable world:

- Industrial design
- 3D Modelling
- Woodworking
- Metal working
- Recycled/ Reused / Reclaimed materials

As you may know, many of our projects are made out of wood. If you have experience working with wood and would like to be part of our team, we can find a nice fit for you in the Kamp! Ruin renovations, toilets, roofs, sheds, platforms or tiny houses… Let us know if you want to be part of our path to build a more sustainable world that is partially made out of wood!

Architect

We’ve made plans for the renovation of our big Community Center. (see here) Next step is legalizing it with the local municipality and going more in depth on what utilities and material we need inside. Besides that we also have many other architectural and legalization work coming up for some new ruins we discovered and want to renovate.

We would like an architect onsite, experienced with this process and Portuguese legislation. (ideally speaks Portuguese) It’s a big task with a very specific role.
  So alternatively we’re looking to assemble a group of remote, diverse architects that can help out remotely.   You can sign up here for any of the two positions

Workspace help (2x)

Project Kamp is still in very early stages and there is a lot to be done. In season 4 we will keep on making new things. For this, we need to grow our workspace team with experience but also with enthusiastic people. This position means having a very diverse job and being involved in different projects in the workspace. Being ready to support and with interest or experience in the following areas:

- Management
- Video
- Tools
- Workspace systems (Stock control, Supply chains, Maintenance…)
- Building
- Trades (Electricity, Plumbing, Plastering, Mason, Tiling, Roofs…)
- Woodworking
- Metalworking
Note: Speaking Portuguese is a great addition!

This year we’re taking on more construction projects in the workspace and have a bigger team. For this we could use help to manage the workspace. We work with design-briefs and set goals for each project. The main skills we need from you is keeping a good overview, help others to follow plannings, keep an eye on the budget and be comfortable with spreadsheets and Google docs. Some management experience is required, having workspace/making skills is a good bonus. You will be working closely with everyone in the workspace so you need to be a good team player. The longer you can stay the better since it can take some time to get used to everything here.

Better camera gear - €1.5K

The update videos are currently filmed with a Canon g7xii in HD. We would like to capture this in 4K for the archive in the future. (Current camera overheats after 3 minutes..We are not a fan) We would like to upgrade our setup and step up our game. Also if you happen to have an unsued gopro? Our workspace is setup in a shipping container. It's great to store our tools safe and do basic work in there. But in order to expand, grow and take on more research we need to double our workspace. Tractor + woodchipper €18K

We have a big piece of land that needs a lot of work. It needs landscaping to retain water, clean up bruned down trees, chip wood, cut gras and dig pipes and lakes. At the moment everything is done by hand. A tractor would allow us to really work the land and speed up massivly. DOnating this would allow us to get a tractor with accesories like chippers and diggers. (we are also up for donating a second hand tractor)

Fund Our first guesthouse - €40K

Project Kamp is not for tourism, its a place to live and work. However we would have visitors dropping by experts, specialist, ecologist etc. We would like to be able to host them so they can share their wisdom with us. (and we share with you in a video) This would be the first comfortable, proper housing structure in Project Kamp. Sorry Vans, we love you but  its not for everyone..

Renovate big ruin/Community Center €300K

We will renovate our big old ruin in a community center. This will allow us to host and facility many more people and visitors to help. At the moment its a burned down shed and needs a lot of work. We need to renovate it. Make architectural plans, rebuild the structure, add electricity, clear the area round and add solar panels to the roof. Follow the progress here. As a bonus try-out we want to make 1 wall from Precious Plastic :)

Ecology + Reforestation €20K

The entire land was fully burned down in 2017, destroying a big part of the native trees. Now what is growing back is basically 1 species, mimosas. A non native invasive tree that grows fast and takes the sunlight for other plants. This makes it in the long term very hard to create a healthy diverse forest life and will have much higher changes for wild fires again in the future. Forest fires are a big challenge in Portugal but we can help to prevent them. We will work with ecologists to analyse the land, create a landscape plan. For years to come.

Upgrade our energy supply €40K

Currently we are running fully off-grid on our own solar power. (4kw) Its awesome. That said we still need to use a generator for our big machines (3phase). If we want to be really offgrid, run machines, and scale up the community we need to setup ourselves with a better energy infrastructure. In the coming years we will scale up with four times the amount of people but are simply not equipped for it. (we are also up for collaborations)

Hook us up to solar - €100K

Running 100% on renewable energy is a long term goal for us. Easy to achieve for a small household, difficult to achieve with 380V machines like welding and a metal lathe. Is requires a big battery pack, solar panels and a backup like hydro/wind energy for the days without sun. It’s mainly a long term goal because it would take us a while before we have the funds. You can speed this up by providing the capital or sponsoring it.
